SMS Settings

SMS Settings control how Thirdlane Connect handles text messaging on your SMS-enabled numbers - who is allowed to reach you, and how numbers you type are interpreted when you start a new conversation. Adjust these to cut down on unwanted texts and to make dialing new recipients simpler.

Allow SMS from unknown numbers. Controls whether messages sent to your SMS-enabled numbers from senders you have never texted before - and who are not in your contacts - are delivered to Connect. Turn this off to reduce spam and only receive texts from people you already know; turn it on if customers or new contacts need to be able to text you first.

Default phone country code. When you start a new SMS conversation, you can enter a number in local form. If you do not type a full E.164 number (one that starts with + and a country code, for example +14155551234), Connect prepends the country code you set here. Set this to the country you text most often so you can enter local numbers without the international prefix.

Understanding E.164

E.164 is the international standard format for phone numbers: a leading +, the country code, then the national number, with no spaces or dashes (for example +442071838750). Texting works most reliably when numbers are in this format, which is why Connect completes partial numbers using your default country code.

Tips

  • Set Default phone country code to your primary country so everyday local numbers just work.
  • For international recipients, type the full + number to override the default country code.
  • If you handle inbound customer texts, keep Allow SMS from unknown numbers on so new customers can reach you; if your number is only for known contacts, turn it off to limit spam.
  • SMS Messaging - send and receive texts and start new SMS conversations.
  • Call Settings - related calling options, including the default phone type used for new contacts.
