Channels

Channels are the group spaces in Thirdlane Connect where teams collaborate - group messaging, file sharing, and voice/video conferences all happen in a channel. Creating channels here (rather than leaving it to end users) lets an administrator set up the shared spaces an organization needs from day one - a company-wide announcements channel, per-department team rooms - and control who runs them. A public channel is open for anyone to join; a private channel is by invitation only.

Create/Edit Channel

Name. Channel name using lowercase letters, digits or underscores. Note that a # will be prepended to the channel name.

Subject. Short channel subject.

Description. Short description of this channel.

Mandatory. All the existing and future Thirdlane Connect users will be unconditionally subscribed to this channel (without an option to unsubscribe).

Public. Anyone can join a public channel while private channel membership is by invitation only.

Default. Specify whether the newly created users will be subscribed as members of this channel automatically (with an option to unsubscribe).

Note that a user can not be selected as an administrator, moderator, or a member at the same time.

Administrators. Select users who will have full administrative privileges for this channel (this will also subscribe these users to this channel).

Moderators. Select users who will have moderator privileges for this channel (this will also subscribe these users members to this channel).

Regular members. Select users who will be subscribed as members of this channel (with an option to unsubscribe).

Best practices

  • Reserve Mandatory for the few channels everyone genuinely must stay in (for example a company-wide announcements channel) - members cannot leave a mandatory channel, so overusing it clutters everyone’s app.
  • Use Default for channels new users should start in but may leave later; it subscribes new accounts automatically without locking them in.
  • Give each channel at least one Administrator or Moderator so it has an owner who can manage membership and moderate content.
  • Remember a user can be an administrator, a moderator, or a regular member of a channel - not more than one of these at the same time.
