Dialplan Variables

Dialplan Variables are named settings that control how the Thirdlane dialplan behaves - things like the default operator extension, ring time, recording format, and which permission checks are enforced. They let you tune system-wide call handling without editing dialplan code: the standard Action Scripts shipped with Configuration Manager read these variables, so changing a value here changes behavior everywhere those scripts run.

Variables set here are global (system-wide) defaults. Many can be overridden at a more specific level (for example a Tenant, route, or extension), following the same “most specific wins” pattern used elsewhere in the platform. In your own Action Scripts you can read any of these with ${VARIABLE_NAME} and define additional variables of your own.

Best practices

  • Do not modify the internal variables below (TL_DASH, TL_MULTI, TL_NEW_RECORDING_MECHANISM) - the system relies on them.
  • When adding your own variables, use a distinct prefix so they never collide with current or future Thirdlane variables (the TL_ prefix is reserved for Thirdlane).
  • Treat changes here as system-wide: verify the effect on a test route/extension before rolling out, since standard scripts across all tenants read these values.

Internal variables (do not change)

The following Global Dialplan Variables are supplied with Thirdlane and cannot be changed, as they are used internally:

TL_DASH

TL_MULTI

TL_NEW_RECORDING_MECHANISM

Configurable variables

The following Global Dialplan Variables are supplied with Thirdlane and can be changed as needed:

OPERATOR. Default operator’s extension.

PROMPT_LANGUAGE. Used to select language for greetings and voice prompts.

RECORDING_FORMAT. The default format for call recording.

RINGTIME. The default time in seconds used when dialing User Extensions.

TIME_ZONE. The default time zone.

TL_CHECK_DIALING_PERMISSIONS. Controls whether the Dialing Permissions will be checked.

TL_CHECK_INBOUND_PERMISSIONS. Controls whether the Inbound Permissions will be checked.

TL_CUSTOM_INBOUND_SCRIPT. Custom Action Script that will be executed when processing inbound calls.

TL_DEBUG. Enables debugging in the dialplan.

TL_ENABLE_MAXCALLS_CHECK. If enabled, will check that “Number of External Calls” defined for Tenants is not exceeded.

TL_ORIGINATE_TIMEOUT. The default timeout for calls originated from the external sources.

TL_REROUTE_LOCAL_DIDS. If enabled, will reroute the calls to phone numbers you own (DIDs) back to your server without going through a carrier.
