Change Log

The Change Log records a history of changes to the objects managed by Configuration Manager - who modified what, and when. It exists to answer the question every administrator eventually faces after something breaks: “what changed, and who changed it?” That makes it invaluable for troubleshooting (correlating a new problem with a recent edit), for accountability across a team of administrators, and for meeting audit requirements.

Change Log is optional and can be enabled or disabled in system-wide Preferences, where you can also specify how long to keep Change Log records.

When disabled, no change history is recorded. When enabled, the log shows which objects were modified, by whom, and when.

Best practices

  • Enable Change Log wherever you have more than one administrator (or any reseller/tenant admins) - shared responsibility is exactly when an audit trail pays off.
  • Give each administrator their own account so changes are attributed to a person, not a shared login.
  • Cross-reference with System Audit - when the audit flags a broken reference, the Change Log tells you when and how it was introduced.
  • Set retention to satisfy your audit policy without keeping the table larger than necessary.
