Default Values

Default Values is where you set the system-wide baseline for how new Tenants, User Extensions, and phones are configured. Instead of setting the same codecs, password rules, voicemail behavior, recording policy, and other options by hand on every new object, you define sensible defaults once here; the platform pre-fills them whenever something new is created (including in the Bulk Generator). This saves time, enforces consistency, and reduces configuration mistakes across a large deployment.

Think of these as starting points, not locks: they populate the initial values, and can be changed afterward at the tenant or individual level.

Note that the values specified on the Tenant level will override system-wide defaults specified here.

SIP Endpoints

In this section, you can specify the default system-wide settings for SIP Endpoints (phones) configuration that will be used in Bulk Generator or as defaults when creating individual User Extensions.

Outbound Dialing Category. Defines what type of calls can be originated from a SIP Endpoint.

Available options are:

  • Allow calling all numbers
  • Disallow calling restricted numbers
  • Allow internal and emergency calls only

Call types are set in Outbound Routes.

Registrations Limit. Maximal number of devices that can register under one SIP account.

Call Limit. Maximal number of concurrent calls for a SIP account.

Enabled codecs. Codecs to be enabled for a SIP account.

Disabled codecs. Codecs to be disabled for a SIP account.

Encryption. Specify options for encrypting calls via an endpoint.

Available options are:

  • Enforce. Make all the outbound calls from an endpoint encrypted and accept only encrypted inbound calls.
  • Reject. Make all the outbound calls unencrypted and accept only unencrypted inbound calls.
  • Negotiate, trying encrypted first. Try to make encrypted outbound calls first, and if that fails, fall back to unencrypted. Accept both encrypted and unencrypted inbound calls.
  • Negotiate, trying unencrypted first. Try to make unencrypted outbound calls first, and if that fails, fall back to encrypted. Accept both encrypted and unencrypted inbound calls.

DTMF mode. Specifies default DTMF (touch-tone) signaling method.

Qualify (ms). Enable and specify the amount of time server waits for keepalive packets from an endpoint. Value of “yes” corresponds to 2000 ms.

Phone Model. Sets default phone model provisioning template.

Other options. Allows you to specify additional options that don’t have corresponding GUI fields. Specify any additional options in the key=value form. Each pair should be entered on a separate line.

Outbound Dialing

In this section, you can specify the default-system wide settings for Outbound Dialing.

Note that some of the settings, like the option to use original caller id when forwarding may be restricted by your service provider who may require that the caller id matches a DID you own.

Default Script for outbound dialing. Name of the script that will be used by default when creating new routes in Outbound Routes.

Allow use of original caller id in forwarded calls. This controls whether the Caller ID from an inbound call could be passed when the call is forwarded. This may or may not be possible and is dependent on your trunk provider.

Password Options

In this section, you can specify the default system-wide settings for how passwords will be generated. Passwords for SIP Endpoints are always random, web passwords and mailbox PINs can be generated based on the options you select.

Phone Password Length. Length of randomly generated passwords when using Bulk Generator or pre-filled on the User Extension screen when creating individual User Extensions.

Web Passwords. Specify how the web passwords are generated. The options are:

  • Random.
  • Based on extension. When using this option you can specify a string that will be appended to the extension based passwords.
  • Based on default. When using this option you can specify the default password and a string that will be added to the passwords.

Web Password Length. Specify the length of the generated web passwords.

Change on First Login. Specify whether the web passwords have to be changed during the first login.

Mailbox PIN. Specify how the mailbox PINs are generated. The options are:

  • Random.
  • Based on extension. When using this option you can specify a string that will be appended to the extension based PINs.
  • Based on default. When using this option you can specify the default PIN and a string that will be added to the PINs.

Append to PIN. Specify a text string to append to generated PINs.

Hide Passwords from users. Specify whether phone passwords will be hidden from users.

Extensions

In this section, you can specify the default system-wide options used when generating User Extensions. These options are used in Bulk Generator and as defaults on the User Extensions screen.

Default script for extensions. Select a default script for handling calls to User Extensions.

Create voicemail mailbox. Specify whether the User Extensions will have voicemail enabled by default.

Default Time Range Group for inbound calls. Default Time Range Group that will be used when automatically generating Inbound Routes for User Extensions in Bulk Generator or User Extensions.

User Settings & Permissions

In this section, you can set the platform-wide language, time zone and voicemail time format, and the default User Portal and Thirdlane Connect permissions given to new users.

Language, time zone and voicemail time format apply to everyone whose organization and personal preferences leave them unset. Permissions are applied to users as they are created; to change an existing user, edit that User Extension.

GUI Language. Language for User Portal and Thirdlane Connect.

Time Zone. The platform-wide time zone, used by anyone whose organization and personal preferences leave it unset. It controls what the Manager, the User Portal, Thirdlane Connect and voicemail announcements show as the local time. See Time Zones.

Voicemail time format. The clock voicemail uses when it speaks the time a message arrived. Automatic follows the convention of the country the time zone belongs to - a 12-hour clock in the United States, Canada, Australia and India, a 24-hour clock elsewhere.

General Permissions. Default User Portal and Thirdlane Connect permissions applied to all new users across the platform. Tenant-level settings can override these defaults.

Omnichannel Messaging. Default omnichannel messaging toggle, off by default for new organizations and extensions. When enabled, the Omnichannel Messaging Permissions grid becomes visible for setting default sub-permissions (Send SMS, Send WhatsApp, Initiate SMS, Initiate WhatsApp, CRM Edit).

Conferencing

In this section, you can specify the default system-wide settings for Conference rooms.

Maximum number of participants. Maximum number of participants that are allowed to join the conference.

Wait for leader (marked user). Wait until the marked user enters the conference. If set will make users wait for a marked user (In Configuration Manager a user who enters administrator’s password is considered to be the marked user).

End conference when leader (marked user) exits. This option will end the conference for everyone after the last marked user exits it.

Play music for single caller. If set will enable music-on-hold even when conference the has a single caller.

Music-on-Hold. Music-on-hold associated with the conference which plays when users are waiting for a marked user.

Enable menu. If set will allow a voice menu. The options presented are dependent on whether it is a regular user or an administrator who presses the key and includes muting and unmuting, increasing or decreasing volume, etc.

Announce user count on joining. If set will play an announcement on a user count to users joining the conference.

Announce when users join/leave. If set will play an announcement every time someone joins or leaves the conference.

Set talker detection. If set will send information about the current talkers to the management interface (required if you would like to see who is talking in the Configuration Manager -> Manage Conference screens).

Record conference. If set then the conference will be recorded. Use this with caution as the recordings can be quite large.

Voicemail

In this section, you can specify the default system-wide settings for Voicemail handling.

Notify by email about new voicemail. Determines whether the users will be notified about new voice mail messages via email.

Attach messages to email. Determines whether the voicemail message will be attached to the notification email.

Delete after delivery. Determines whether voice mail messages will be deleted after they are delivered via email.

Other mailbox options. This section allows you to specify additional options that don’t have corresponding GUI fields. Specify any additional options in the key=value form. Each pair should be entered on a separate line.

Worked example: set a secure baseline before rolling out users

You are standing up a new platform and want every tenant, user, and phone that gets created afterward to start from a safe, consistent configuration - so the Bulk Generator produces finished users with no cleanup.

  1. SIP Endpoints. Set Outbound Dialing Category to “Disallow calling restricted numbers” (so new phones cannot dial premium/international by default), pick your standard Enabled codecs (for example g722,ulaw), set Encryption to “Negotiate, trying encrypted first”, and set Phone Model to the handset you stock most.
  2. Password Options. Set Phone Password Length to 16, Web Passwords to Random with Web Password Length 12, turn Change on First Login on, and set Mailbox PIN to Random. This gives every new account strong, unique credentials automatically.
  3. Extensions. Leave Default script for extensions at tl-stdexten, turn Create voicemail mailbox on, and set the Default Time Range Group to your business-hours schedule so auto-generated inbound routes follow office hours.
  4. Call Recording. Be deliberate: enable only Record External Incoming and Record External Outgoing if you record customer calls but not internal chatter, and set the transcription limits to cap cost.
  5. Save, then create a tenant. Now clone or add a Tenant: its forms are pre-filled from everything above. Override only the few values that differ for that customer - the rest is inherited.

Because these are defaults and not locks, a specific tenant or user can still change any value later; you have simply made the common case correct and safe out of the box.

Best practices

  • Set defaults before you provision at scale. Getting codecs, encryption, and password policy right here means the Bulk Generator produces correctly-configured users the first time, with no per-user cleanup.
  • Default to encryption where your endpoints support it. Choosing an SRTP encryption mode as the default raises the security baseline for every new endpoint; pair it with SIP Encryption (TLS) for signaling.
  • Choose strong password generation defaults. Longer web passwords and mailbox PINs, plus “change on first login,” give every new account a safe baseline. Consider “Hide passwords from users” for tighter environments.
  • Be conservative with call recording defaults. Recording all calls has storage and, in many regions, legal/consent implications. Enable only the recording categories you actually need, and set transcription limits under Call Recording to control cost.
  • Remember these are defaults, not enforcement. Tenant- and user-level settings override them, so use Default Values for the common case and adjust the exceptions individually.
  • Trunks - trunk defaults set here pre-fill new trunk forms.
  • SIP Encryption (TLS) - encrypt SIP signaling alongside SRTP media encryption.
  • Speech Services - the transcription engine behind the Call Recording transcription defaults.
  • Bulk Generator - creates users and phones using these defaults.
